Cheap flood barriers: what you actually get for the money

Search for a flood barrier and the cheapest results are not made by anyone you can telephone. They are marketplace listings, mostly imported, and they are considerably less expensive than anything a Florida installer will quote you. It is a fair question why. Here is a straight answer, with the actual listings and the actual numbers.

The import tier tops out at 31 inches and most of it sits nearer 24.

The comparison that actually matters

The useful question is not whether these products would survive a hurricane. It is whether they are tall enough to be doing the job you are buying them for. The system we sell and install most often is five planks — 3 ft 5 in. Published maximum heights from the larger manufacturers in this market run to six feet and above, garage systems are commonly quoted at six feet of protection, and the Florida Building Code works to base flood elevation plus a foot of freeboard. That is not a cheaper version of the same product. It is a shorter one.

Three things the price does not include

Height is only the first question. There are three more, and none of them show up in a marketplace listing.

There is no engineered post. Water at three feet exerts roughly 280 pounds of force per linear foot — around 4,500 pounds on a sixteen-foot garage — before wave action or debris.
There is nobody to call. If it does not fit, does not seal, or fails during an event, the recourse is a marketplace returns process.
There is nothing to hand anyone: no alloy, temper, wall thickness, seal specification, test data, or installation manual worth the name.

Where this leaves a homeowner

None of this makes imported product fraudulent. It is what it is, and at $40 a linear foot for 16 inches of protection it is arguably priced correctly. The problem is that it is sold as the same thing as a system engineered, specified and installed to a measured opening. Work out the height you actually need first, then see how many of the cheap options can reach it. On most Florida houses the honest answer eliminates the entire tier before price becomes the question.

Are cheap flood barriers from Amazon or eBay any good?

They are generally genuine aluminium and they will hold back water to their rated height. The issue is that the rated height is usually 16 to 31 inches, which is below what most Florida properties are specified for, and they come with no post engineering, no warranty and no documentation.

How much should a flood barrier cost?

Imported marketplace product runs $40 to $70 per linear foot at 16 to 31 inches of protection, product only. Consumer-brand door dams run $220 to $300 per linear foot at around 28 inches. Engineered systems from Florida installers are quoted per opening and include measurement, fabrication and installation.

Why are imported flood barriers so much cheaper?

Lower protection height, no engineered post system, no US entity carrying warranty or liability, no published material testing, and no installation. The price difference reflects real differences in what is supplied.

How much force does floodwater put on a barrier?

Hydrostatic load scales with the square of depth. Roughly 280 pounds per linear foot at three feet of standing water, and more than 500 at four feet, before wave action or debris impact. That load goes through the posts into your building.

What documentation should come with a flood barrier?

At minimum: the alloy and temper, section dimensions and wall thicknesses, the seal material, an installation manual, and a written warranty. If a supplier cannot produce those, there is nothing to verify and nothing to hand on.
